Rogue Ranch 30K at Reveille Peak Ranch Race Report

I haven't run anything long since the Ouachita Trail 50K in April. My legs felt terrible at the end of that run, and I had to limp in on the 3-mile home stretch on a busy road...not the most fun in the world. I took a week off from running, and then slowly got back on track. I switched from the trail shoes I wore up in Arkansas to New Balance MT101 shoes, because they didn't make my knees hurt. My best guess is that by running in the MT101s, I changed my stride, and made my overpronation shoes overcompensate. All of this made me cut down on the miles I would run, because I didn't want to hurt myself.

Prickly Pear 50K 2011 Race Report

Had a great run in San Antonio at McAllister Park on Saturday in the Prickly Pear 50K trail race. I set a new 50K PR of 6:39, which is probably still a little soft for me. My splits were 1:58, 2:09, and 2:30. It got hot, and I started cramping in the last 3 miles, even though I took 7 or 8 Hammer Endurolytes each hour in the last three hours. After the first 20 miles, I felt like I could have kept going another 30 at about the same pace if it had been cooler out.

Run at St. Edwards Park with Rocky

I'm trying to get Rocky outside every day of the four day Thanksgiving holiday, but I kind of have to avoid some of my favorite spots to take him because I figure they'll be too crowded. Today, I decided to go do an interval run with him at Bull Creek, which is a flat course with lots of creek crossings, making for perfect intervals. Unfortunately, the trail just upstream of the Lakewood parking lot was blocked by a downed tree, and I didn't really feel like picking my way through all of the lumber - I wanted to run!

Wild Hare 10K Race Report

Wild Hare 10K Race Report
11/20/2010
Warda, Texas

Short version:
I had a lot of fun running all out at the race. I tried to keep up with Elizabeth Comer (who's faster than I am) on the first half of the race, passed her at the aid station where she stopped to get her cramps worked on, and then pushed hard the last two miles into a finish at 54 minutes. I had no idea what place I was in in the race because we were in with 25K runners from the beginning, but when I finished, Joe congratulated me on pushing hard and then handed me the third place award (a little ant). I was pretty thrilled! Elizabeth won the women's race, and for the last mile, I was pushing really hard to stay ahead of her - I finished only ten seconds ahead!

Rockledge Rumble 50K Race Report
November 13, 2010
Grapevine, Texas

I was excited about coming up to the Dallas/Fort Worth area to run the Rockledge Rumble trails at Lake Grapevine. I'd heard that the Northshore trails were the best for trail running in the Metroplex, and the race fit pretty well into my calendar, two weeks after the Cactus Rose 50 Miler.

Cactus Rose 50 Mile Race Report 2010

Cactus Rose 50 Mile Report
October 30, 2010
Bandera, Texas

I wasn't sure what to do with Cactus Rose, even after I'd signed up for the race a month earlier. The race is a semi-self-supported 50 mile and 100 mile race through the Hill Country State Natural Area in Bandera, Texas outside San Antonio. There isn't any food or sports drink at the aid stations - if you want anything, you have to provide it yourself. In a race of this distance, you should probably be doing that anyway, so Cactus really makes you think about your race strategy. There is water and ice at each aid station, and the course is really well marked, so it's not a fat-ass type race.

Ran the Leon Creek Greenway Half Marathon on Saturday in San Antonio

We were looking for a half marathon in Texas this last weekend, and there were two - the Texas Medclinic Leon Creek Greenway Half Marathon in San Antonio on Saturday, and the Tyler Rose Half Marathon on Sunday in Tyler, Texas. The Tyler Rose race definitely had a better medal, but it was twice as expensive and we would have had to spend the night before in Tyler - it's a 4 hour drive from Austin, probably more on a Saturday.
