I'm trying to get Rocky outside every day of the four day Thanksgiving holiday, but I kind of have to avoid some of my favorite spots to take him because I figure they'll be too crowded. Today, I decided to go do an interval run with him at Bull Creek, which is a flat course with lots of creek crossings, making for perfect intervals. Unfortunately, the trail just upstream of the Lakewood parking lot was blocked by a downed tree, and I didn't really feel like picking my way through all of the lumber - I wanted to run!
The next closest place to go run is St. Edwards Park in northwest Austin. It's got two parts - some flat trails down along the creek, and some hilly, technical trails on the other side of the creek. Rocky had some energy to burn (and ok, so did I!) so we went for the hills. We ran down the trail from the parking lot to the creek crossing on Spicewood Springs road, flying over the new water barriers. I turned Rocky towards the hill up, and we ran up the whole thing, though Rocky ran out of stream after we turned the corner at the top, so I gave him a minute-long break. He must still be tired from the River Place trails yesterday!
We came back down the steep, ledgy trail next to the barbed wire and then took a neat swooping trail down to the usual trail I use to cut back to where I started.
We crossed Spicewood Springs Road after turning to the *right* at the bottom of the hill on a trail so we could run the quarter-mile flat singletrack on the other side. Rocky was pooped, and couldn't keep up, so I had to slow down, unfortunately!
This was a pretty fun run, probably no more than 2 miles total, but my guess is that the climb from the creek to the Forest Ridge entrance is about 300 feet of elevation gain.
