Prickly Pear 50K 2011 Race Report

Had a great run in San Antonio at McAllister Park on Saturday in the Prickly Pear 50K trail race. I set a new 50K PR of 6:39, which is probably still a little soft for me. My splits were 1:58, 2:09, and 2:30. It got hot, and I started cramping in the last 3 miles, even though I took 7 or 8 Hammer Endurolytes each hour in the last three hours. After the first 20 miles, I felt like I could have kept going another 30 at about the same pace if it had been cooler out.

Lyndon B Johnson National Historical Park

Description:

The Lyndon B Johnson NHP preserves two areas - President Johnson's LBJ Ranch 13 miles west of Johnson City, and LBJ's family homes in Johnson City. The Texas White House is now open to the public for guided tours by NPS staff. Next to the ranch is LBJ State Park, which mostly hosts a working German farm. Also take the self-guided driving tour through the ranch. They also have a movie about LBJ to watch.

LBJ's Boyhood Home is located in Johnson City, and is quite humble - you can take a guided tour to see how he rose from his roots in a prominent family in a small town to President of the United States. After taking the tour, go through the exhibits in the visitor center and watch one of the two movies (Ladybird Johnson or LBJ the President). From the visitor center you can walk or drive to the Johnson Settlement to view LBJ's grandfather's dogtrot cabin
.
Combine a trip to the National Historical Park with a visit to the LBJ Presidential Library in Austin - it's free and open all year long.

Wolf Mountain Trail

The Wolf Mountain Trail is a nice 7.5 mile lollipop loop in Pedernales Falls State Park. This is one of the easiest longer hikes in the Austin area, and is very suitable for beginning hikers or mountain bikers. Intermediate and advanced mountain bikers won't be challenged by the jeep roads on the trail.

Run at St. Edwards Park with Rocky

I'm trying to get Rocky outside every day of the four day Thanksgiving holiday, but I kind of have to avoid some of my favorite spots to take him because I figure they'll be too crowded. Today, I decided to go do an interval run with him at Bull Creek, which is a flat course with lots of creek crossings, making for perfect intervals. Unfortunately, the trail just upstream of the Lakewood parking lot was blocked by a downed tree, and I didn't really feel like picking my way through all of the lumber - I wanted to run!

River Place Nature Trails

The River Place Nature Trail is one of the newest, most scenic, and best maintained trails in Austin. The trail follows Panther Hollow Creek in a small canyon beneath the River Place development. In a 6 mile round trip, the trail gains (and loses) about 500 feet in elevation. All that elevation is gained or lost on natural surface stairways built into the hills. All along the trail, you'll get quiet glimpses of typical Balcones Canyonland vistas, although you'll always see some kind of building or structure.

Birmingham Triathlon

For being the largest city in Alabama, there aren't a huge number of triathlons in the Birmingham area. Team Magic puts on triathlons in Birmingham, including the Birmingham Levite JCC Triathlon super-sprint tri and the sprint-distance Buster Britton Memorial Triathlon.

In March, Team Magic puts on the Powerman Alabama Multisport Weekend, centered around the Powerman Alabama Duathlon (10K/60K/10k). Shorter distance road duathlons are available, along with a trail run and an XTERRA off-road duathlon.

Wild Hare 10K Race Report

Wild Hare 10K Race Report

Short version:
I had a lot of fun running all out at the race. I tried to keep up with Elizabeth Comer (who's faster than I am) on the first half of the race, passed her at the aid station where she stopped to get her cramps worked on, and then pushed hard the last two miles into a finish at 54 minutes. I had no idea what place I was in in the race because we were in with 25K runners from the beginning, but when I finished, Joe congratulated me on pushing hard and then handed me the third place award (a little ant). I was pretty thrilled! Elizabeth won the women's race, and for the last mile, I was pushing really hard to stay ahead of her - I finished only ten seconds ahead!

The Wild Hare trail race is a 10K/25K/50K/50 mile run, all held on the same course, a 7.5 mile loop of mountain biking trails. The race is put on by Tejas Trails out of Austin, and it's a lot of fun. November is usually a good month for running, and with all the different distances and races, there's something for everyone. You can camp out at Bluff Creek Ranch, the private mountain biking ranch where the race is held the night before or the night afterwards. You can also pay for a cot in the barn if you want to sleep there.
