Leon Creek Greenway

The Leon Creek Greenway is being expanded - for now, the main section goes between Bandera (Mainland) and Babcock in west-northwest San Antonio through O P Schnabel Park. The path is paved, and wide enough for walkers, bikers, and runners to share if everyone is being polite. Along the paved path, you will see lots of unpaved trails going off into the woods for exploring.

Medina River Greenway

This seven mile paved path is perfect for a relaxing bike ride or a run away from traffic. The trail goes between the Medina River Natural Area and Old Applewhite Road in far south San Antonio.

Salado Creek Greenway

The Salado Creek Greenway is currently being built, but right now, there are three different segments:

Blanco to Huebner - 1.7 miles - parking at Huebener is basically impossible, small lot at Blanco
Loop 410 to Eisenhauer - 2.8 miles
Covington Park to South Side Lions park - 2.3 miles

The Bataan Memorial Death March isn't just a marathon and 15-mile run/march/hike - it's a commemoration of the American and Filipino survivors of the Bataan Death March in the Phillippines in World War 2. This event is put on at White Sands Missile Range in Las Cruces, New Mexico, and is mostly a military event - but civilians are more than welcome!

Trail Run

Escalante River Trail

Hike along the Escalante River Trail on a 15 mile one-way trail between Escalante town and the Highway 12 bridge in the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument.

Spectra Point/Ramparts Overlook Trail

Of the three hiking trails within Cedar Breaks National Monument, Spectra Point/Ramparts Overlook trail is the one you should hike. The views of the breaks from the visitor center are incredible, but the trail actually goes out onto the breaks after clinging to the cliff for half a mile. Along the way you'll see bristlecone pines, including a 1,600 year old specimen.

Las Vegas Swimming

If you're coming out to Vegas and you need to get a swim in for your triathlon training, you have a lot of options beyond your hotel pool. Sure you can get up before everyone else and try and make laps in some kind of weird palm-shaped oasis, or you could wait and maybe get some pool-side blackjack in between sets, but don't limit yourself.

Open Water Swimming:

Turkey Creek Nature Trail

The Turkey Creek off-leash dog nature trail is a real gem for dog owners and their canine companions who like to hike, run, swim, and play with other dogs off-leash. The hike itself is great, with lots of improvements in recent years. There are about 10 stream crossings, all of which have rocks or steps to cross at. The dogs can play in the swimming holes along the way.

Emma's Revenge Trail Run and Mountain Bike Race

Three different events on the same day at Emma Long City Park, there is a 5K and an 11 mile trail run (short, probably more like 9-10 miles), and a 16-mile mountain bike race. These are held on the trails used for the Pure Austin XTERRA Austin Triathlon the next day. The run is held on a trail system on top of the bluffs overlooking Lake Austin, and going up and down the cliff is pretty tricky - the organizers put up a rope for runners to use.
