Description:
Gates of the Arctic National Park in northern Alaska contains the central Brooks Range of mountains, arctic tundra, and alpine valleys. The park is not easy to get to - access is usually by bush plane, and visitors have to be self sufficient. There are no established trails in the park, and no facilities or roads.
It is possible to arrange water transportation through an outfitter, such as rafts or inflatable canoes. This can make transporting a week's worth of supplies much easier. Other than by boat, you will have to explore the park on foot, camping along the way. There are no established camp sites; the park recommends the gravel bars of rivers. Proper attention to food safety is essential to not attracting wildlife to your campsite.
