Description:

Katmai National Park in Alaska protects the Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes, a volcanic ash flow. Now the park is even more famous for the brown bears of Brooks Camp. The bear-viewing platforms of Brooks Camp are a world-renowned photographic destination for getting pictures of brown bears catching salmon.

The park offers several ranger programs - an hour long cultural walk to a home site, a three mile round trip hike up the flanks of Dumpling Mountain into alpine tundra, and a bus tour of the Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes.

Visiting the park is complicated, as there are no roads into the park. The closest commercial airport is King Salmon. You will need to get a flight or a boat into the park from King Salmon (or possibly other Alaska locations). There are regular float planes into Brooks Camp from King Salmon from the local concessioner, Katmailand. You can either camp at Brooks camp, or stay at the lodge. You will also need to attend a bear orientation at the park on arrival.

The lodge offers snacks and meals. It also provides canoe and kayak rentals.

Katmai also attracts anglers for rainbow trout and salmon. You can arrange sport fishing trips through outfitters. There are special regulations for the fishery, and you will need to be aware of them and comply with Alaska fishing laws.
