Lassen Volcanic National Park is in the remote northeast of California , 44 miles east of Redding California.
The park contains Lassen Peak, a 10,800 foot dormant volcano. The trail to the top of Lassen Peak is steep, rising 2,000 vertical feet over 2.5 miles, but does not require any climbing skills to get to the top. The climb is one of the top attractions of the park.
Other park visitors go to visit the thermal areas, including Bumpass Hell. Bumpass Hell is similar to the geothermal areas of Yellowstone, with fumaroles and mud pots and boiling springs. Lassen Volcanic also has many lakes, and some, like Bathtub Lake, are perfect for swimming. If you drive out of the main portion of the park to the Butte Lake area, the Cinder Cone trail leads you up the side of a volcanic cinder cone to views of its crater and the Fantastic Lava Beds.
