Sloss Furnaces National Historical Landmark in Birmingham, Alabama is a tribute to our decayed urban industrial past. The former ironmaking plant has been preserved in a fascinating natural state, with green plant growth filling in rust-red equipment.
Sloss Furnaces is the most intriguing place in all of Alabama (and we've been to Russell Cave, the country band ALABAMA museum, and Fairhope). Visiting the post-industrial ruins makes you consider what modern urban infrastructure will be left to decay by future generations. Will interstate highways become elevated gardens? Will nuclear plant cooling towers be used to store rainwater?
