The Mississippi Trail 50 is one of the older trail ultramarathons in the South - currently, it's also the state of Mississippi's only ultramarathon.

The race is held on nice soft trails in the DeSoto national forest, but these can flood if it's been raining, turning the MS50 into a real mud-fest. Weather has also been an issue in previous races - the 2011 edition was stopped early to due to inclement weather - it's not safe to cross the creeks on the course when it's flooding.
