With Oak Mountain State Park offering a great venue for trail running, many trail races have started to appear in Birmingham, led by the Oak Mountain 50K and the XTERRA Oak Mountain State Park Half Marathon (part of the XTERRA Alabama Trail series).

Alabama has turned into a hotbed of winter ultramarathoning, luring runners from all over the Southeast, with the Pinhoti 100 mile trail race, the Mount Cheaha 50K trail race, the Tashka 50K in Lake Lurleen State Park in Tuscaloosa, the Dizzy Fifties in Huntsville, the Mountain Mist 50K, and the Black Warrior 50K.
