Lake Grapevine North Shore Trail

The North Shore Trail on Lake Grapevine is the best mountain biking trail in the Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex. The trail is an 18-mile round trip on singletrack, and 5 miles each way of the single track is one-way. Only 4 miles of the trail are shared out-and-back, making the tight turns on this trail much easier to negotiate.

Directions given here are to the MADD Shelter, which is a good starting point for both mountain biking and trail running.

Sansom Park

Description:

For more technical mountain biking than the Northshore Trail, hit up Sansom Park in Northwest Fort Worth. The park overlooks Lake Worth, and has seven miles of flowing singletrack, organized into several loops. The green and blue loops are beginner-friendly, and anything red is more advanced. The courses are marked by colored paint on rocks, not by trail signs or posts.

The park isn't really that great for other users. Mountain bikers will be coming at high speed through the trails, making hiking not too much fun. There also isn't much air flow through the trees. For trail running and hiking, consider going a few miles further out the Jacksboro Highway to the Fort Worth Nature and Science Center.

There is a lot of broken glass in the parking lot from vehicle break-ins, and a lot of broken glass on the trail (bad for your mountain bike tires). Definitely come here in a small group.

The Toughest N Texas 50K, 20 Mile, 10 Mile, and 5 Mile trail races in Waco's Cameron Park are put on Houston running coach Tim Neckar. These races are small but friendly, but the course is tough! Waco's course is tougher than Cross Timbers, but not as tough as the Bandera Trail Races, to rank it among Texas ultras. The hills in Cameron Park keep coming, because the mountain bikers used every piece of vertical they could to make the trails interesting.

The Cross Timbers Trail Run (50 Mile, Marathon, Half Marathon, 5 Mile) is the oldest trail race in Texas, and one of the best. This classic winter trail run is held on the shores of Lake Texoma on the Cross Timbers Trail, a 12 mile backpacking/hiking trail. The trail is tough! There are lots of ups and downs on the trail, none of them too large, but they add up. The footing can be eroded away, and there are lots of places where running isn't really an option.
